Chlorpyrifos is a broad spectrum pesticide and insecticide used widely throughout the world since 1966, and is registered for use in over 100 countries. It is non-systemic and is designed to be effective due to contact, ingestion and inhalation. Chlorpyrifos is applied as a spray, as both a direct-spray pin point application and a wide area application. It works due to its action as an inhibitor of acetylcholinesterase, a enzyme essential to the functioning of the nervous system. The infibition of the action of this enzyme results in the destruction of the nervous system and death of the pest. It is effective in controlling a wide variety of animal and insect pests on crops, including biting and sucking insects such caterpillars and aphids, stem boring larvae like wheat bulb fly and fruit fly and soil feeding larvae like cut worms and leatherjackets. Chlorpyrifos is used on a large variety of crops such as wheat, barley, oats, maize, broccoli, cabbage, calabrese, cauliflower, sugar beet, potatoes, onions as well as amenity grass lands.
