Linuron, which is a substituted urea (phenylurea) compound, is used as a selective herbicide to control both annual broadleaf weeds, perennial broadleaf weeds and grassy weeds. It can be applied as a pre-emergence treatment and a post-emergence treatment. Rain or irrigation is required to activate the herbicide. It works by inhibiting photosynthesis is the target plant species, such as annual meadow grass, mayweed spp. and shepherd’s purse.  It also provides additive activity on problem weed species such as bindweed, fat hen, nettle spp, redshank and knotgrass.   It can be used on cropped land and non-crop sites.  Crops suitable to be treated with linuron herbicide include carrots, combining peas, field beans, parsely and potatoes.
