Cypermethrin is a synthethic pyrenoid that acts a broad spectrum insecticide, and is used in both homes and agricultural products. Cypermethrin was first synthesised in 1974, as one of the pyrethroid compounds developed as being similar to the natural compound pyrethrin, extracted from Chrysanthemum flowers, but which are longer acting. Cypermethrin acts on contact with, or by digestion by the pest organism.  It affects the central nervous system of the pests by causing the sodium channels of the nerve membrane to remain open much longer than normal, up to several seconds.  Cypermethrin is approved for use on a broad range of crops including apple, barley, broccoli/calabrese, brussels sprout, cabbage, cauliflower, field bean, fodder beet, grassland, kale, mangel, oats, oilseed rape, pear, potato, red beet, rye, sugar beet, triticale, vining pea and wheat. Cypermethrin is mainly used as an emulsifiable concentrate , although wettable powders and other formats are available.
