MCPA or 2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid is a widely used selective systemic herbicide for post-emergence control of broad-leaved weeds.
MCPA or 2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid is a widely used selective systemic herbicide for post-emergence control of broad-leaved weeds. MCPA is a member of the chemical family Aryloxyalkanoic acid. The product is absorbed through the roots and leaves of susceptible plants and translocated to the active growing points and meristematice regions of the target plant, where its hormone-like active disrupted the growth and cell division. It results in rapid, but unstructured growth of the plants, causing them to appear twisted. MCPA is effective at controlling a wide spectrum of broad-leaved weeds, including docks and thistles amoung many others. MCPA is approved for barley, grassland, oats, rye and wheat. It is particularly used to control weeds in amenity turf. It is sold alone, as well as in combination formulations with dicamba, mecoprop-P, ferrous sulphate, 2,4 D, clopyralid, fluroxypyr and dichlorprop-P in a variety of concentrations and formulations.
