Ethephon is a synthetic compound which decomposes into ethylene, a natural plant growth regulator in plant tissues.  Ethephon is used to promote pre-harvest ripening, to aid in harvesting and promoting post-harvest ripening.  It is used to promote ripening in top fruits, soft fruits, cereals such as wheat, rice, tobacco and cotton, tomatoes, sugar beets, fodder beets and coffee.  It is used to aid in the harvest of fruit and berry crops. It is used to accelerate the ripening of bananas and pineapples.  Other uses include stimulating the flow of latex in rubber trees, accelerating the maturation of tobacco and the preventation of lodging in cereals such as maize and flax.  Ethephon penetrates into all tissues of the plants to which it is applied and is metabolised to ethylene and phosphate and chloride ions.

Ethephon was first manufactured by Bayer Crop Science. It is now sold as Cerone, Padawan and Ripe-On.
